The Wonders in the Sky

The boy was 9.
He laid there on the grassy hill looking up to the sky in wonder.
The massive creature soared several thousand feet above him.
A sky whale – one of the few remaining wonders left in the world.
It let out a pulse of sound that soared through the clouds.
It glided through the air like the majestic creature it was.
He stared intently with his hands behind his head.
Even at his age, he knew, these wonders would soon fade.
They would become just a distant memory.
The sky whale pulsed again as if communicating with his thoughts.
He would have to describe them for his own sons, and them to their own.
This way, their magic could be known.
He watched the sky whale shrink closer as it neared the horizon.
It faded in the twilight rays, sad the boy sat up.
He would always remember this day; the pulse will live on.
He sighed as he stood.
He dusted off his pants.
His mother will be waiting, he thought.
He got on his bicycle and peddled off into the night.
